Packing Tips
- Chest of drawers can be left
filled with normal items of clothing as long as the drawers are
removable.
- Washing Machines should be
disconnected, emptied, and ideally the drum should be locked with the
original locking bolts if these are still available.
- Start the packing process as
early as possible, starting from the top of the house and working
towards the bottom. Pack everything that you are not going to
need. Disassemble items that need to be taken apart, making sure
that all screws etc are safely stored. Cigarette packets or small
cardboard cartons are ideal. Make sure you label them and store
all of these in another cardboard box like a shoe box. When you
need to reassemble they are all in one place.
- Glassware and china, need to
be packed with care. Line the bottom and sides and top of the box
with plenty of paper. Plates should be stood on their sides to
avoid breakage. Wrapped classes should also be packed standing up
as they are stronger than when laid on their sides. Always mark
these boxes with 'Fragile Items ↑ This way up GLASS/FRAGILE'
- Books weigh heavy so no more
than 30 standard books to a box or split the books up and pack with
lighter items.
- Mark your boxes by room, so
you know exactly where everything goes. Colour coding or using a number
system works great (i.e., red stickers for bedroom or 1 for bathroom.)
- Make up an 'Open First' box
and make sure you have things in this that you might need straight away,
like your kettle and cups, or pans ready to prepare a meal. Toilet
paper is a must, and a lighter and candles are always useful as you just
never know when your power might go off, which is annoying under normal
circumstances but bewildering in a new house, with most of your worldly
goods in boxes.
- Try and make a list of the
contents of each box in a notebook so that you can easily locate
individual items in a hurry
